Don't Drink The Milk!

For those of you who haven't heard, there has been some issues with Chinese milk recently. A powdered milk called Sanlu was causing kidney stones in children and there were four deaths.

If you want to read more about it, you can check it out HERE.

Keeping that in mind, THIS story is hilarious and depressing to me. A UK business secretary drank some Chinese milk on the news to show his support for Chinese products. Nine days later he was diagnosed with a kidney stone. I am fully aware this could be a ploy or a honest mistake and he already had the stone or some media work up, but if it IS true, it's just too ironic not to share.

In related news...I can't remember the last time I had milk. And now I want some.

I've been following this story for some time - it has received widespread coverage in Western media, as have all recent safety problems with Chinese goods.

It's easy for Westerners to point in horror at these events and proclaim righteously about the danger of buying Chinese products, but it would be hypocritical to do so. The US went through the same type of growing pains during our own Industrial Revolution, and the problems were so pervasive that it took years to sort out. (Read Upton Sinclair's The Jungle for a look at the meat processing industry in the US at the turn of the 20th century.)

I don't think it will take the Chinese as long to straighten their food processors out as it did for us, because the Chinese are under a world-wide media microscope, and in the US it took years just to get someone to care.
